West Flanders Red Cross Helps The Westhoek

Belgian Red Cross-Flanders is launching a large-scale solidarity action for the municipalities and citizens affected by the flooding in West Flanders. To this end, it has asked the mayors of the affected regions to indicate the material and psychosocial assistance needed by their inhabitants. Based on that analysis, Belgian Red Cross-Flanders will mobilize its more than 2,000 volunteers in West Flanders to clean up homes and make them livable again, run errands and provide the necessary psychosocial assistance.

The Westhoek has been badly hit by flooding. Red Cross West Flanders already took action by keeping the shelter open and manning the federal emergency number. Now we are going a step further and are committed to helping those affected/evacuated return to their homes, giving them a hand in cleaning up and making their homes habitable again, as well as, for example, shopping. If necessary, we can also call in our psychological assistance team SIS (Social Intervention Service).

All mayors of the affected municipalities have been informed that their citizens can call on Red Cross West Flanders. Our 2000 West Flanders volunteers are on standby and if necessary we can also call on a pool of civilian volunteers. As soon as the first calls come in, the relief action is started.

Meanwhile, at the provincial headquarters of Red Cross West Flanders, a container with equipment and cleaning supplies is already waiting. This was brought by the logistics unit from our headquarters in Mechelen.
