International Red Cross and Red Crescent Conference 2024
From Oct. 28 to 31, 2024, the International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent will take place in Geneva, home to the world's largest humanitarian movement. This unique, non-political forum brings together a global network of 191 national societies, along with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), states parties to the Geneva Conventions and observers.
The quadrennial conference represents a key moment in the humanitarian agenda and provides a platform for in-depth discussions and the promotion of global humanitarian cooperation in order to:
- engage and improve humanitarian debates. This event provides an unparalleled opportunity to discuss critical humanitarian issues and formulate new, groundbreaking solutions.
- adopt resolutions and pledges.
- Resolutions are binding decisions to do or not do something.
- Pledges are voluntary, non-binding commitments that demonstrate participants' active commitment to achieving humanitarian goals. These pledges are flexible, creative and concrete commitments tailored to local, national or global contexts.
What is on the agenda?
Five resolutions were prepared this year by Red Cross Belgium together with Belgian authorities, including:
- Building a universal culture of compliance with international humanitarian law
- Protecting civilians and other vulnerable groups from the risks of ICT activities during armed conflict
- Strengthening disaster risk management through laws and regulations
- Promote local leadership capacity for principled humanitarian action
- Protecting people from the effects of extreme climate disasters by strengthening anticipatory actions
An influential forum for humanitarian action
This is the time to be part of a global movement dedicated to protecting the vulnerable, promoting international humanitarian law and a more just world. This is the time to discuss current issues and focus back on more humanity and to strive for a lasting peace.
