June 20 = World Refugee Day

On June 20, people around the world celebrate World Refugee Day.

"World Refugee Day is an international day chosen by the United Nations to celebrate the strength and courage of people forced to flee their homelands. World Refugee Day is an opportunity to build empathy and understanding for their plight and to recognize their resilience in rebuilding their lives." UNHCR said.

This year's focus is on the right to safety. Because everyone - whoever you are, wherever you come from and whenever you flee - has the right to safe passage and home.

And a safe haven is exactly what the shelters at Belgian Red Cross-Flanders are for the thousands of applicants for international protection. The absolute basis is offering "bed, bath and bread. But the shelters also offer counseling. In this way Belgian Red Cross-Flanders tries to support the residents every day, offering them safety and the security of a 'home'. Everyone's needs are addressed with integrity and professionalism. These are the core values of Belgian Red Cross-Flanders that are lived out by all our staff and volunteers. The center leadership and supervisors work with the residents to create a safe home, with and for each other.

As a shelter provider, you cannot do this alone. A place where people feel at home is a place where they are accepted and part of society. Belgian Red Cross-Flanders therefore cooperates with many external partners, volunteers, local residents and sympathizers. Creating a home for refugees concerns us all.

The campaign for World Refugee Day 2023 came about in collaboration with residents, volunteers and staff of our shelters. In their hands they carry an important word or object that offers support and comfort in a world where we need each other's support more than ever. Will you too reach out?
