1 year after devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, needs remain high
Today marks one year since severe earthquakes struck Turkey and Syria. Despite the aid already provided, the needs in the affected areas remain significant and there is still a long way to go to normalize the situation on the ground.
In Turkey, more than 400,000 people live in temporary shelters, with limited access to clean water. The local economy and infrastructure need urgent support. In Syria, needs for basic services and medical care remain high.
Thanks to more than 80,000 dedicated volunteers and staff, the Red Cross Movement has already provided support to 14 million people in both countries. In Turkey, we have provided nearly 800,000 people with shelter and are shifting to financial support to stimulate the local economy. In Syria, we are focusing on basic health care and food distribution. In both countries, we also focus heavily on providing psychosocial support.
