1 year after the earthquake in Morocco: this is how it helps Belgian Red Cross-Flanders

Almost 1 year ago, Morocco was rocked by a devastating earthquake. In the aftermath, Belgian Red Cross-Flanders worked to save lives and support communities, an effort that continues today.

Thanks to the massive solidarity of Flemings, Belgian Red Cross-Flanders was able to raise more than 900,000 euros. This amount was transferred to the Moroccan Red Crescent, through the German Red Cross operating in the affected area.

Immediately after the disaster, the Moroccan Red Crescent mobilized with search and rescue operations, evacuations, first aid and psychosocial support. In addition, emergency relief was distributed, shelter arranged and sanitation restored. These efforts reached more than 23,000 people severely affected by the earthquake.

From September 2023 to March 2024, Belgian Red Cross-Flanders also sent an operations manager to Marrakesh to support coordination of this aid on the ground. Although significant progress has been made, the situation in the region remains challenging. The remoteness of many affected villages and extreme temperatures, sometimes reaching 50°C, present persistent obstacles for affected communities.

Belgian Red Cross-Flanders therefore remains committed to long-term support for the Moroccan Red Crescent Society. Our assistance now focuses on strengthening organizational capacity, preparing for future disasters and promoting basic health care in the communities. Belgian Red Cross-Flanders thus confirms its continued commitment to rebuilding and supporting the affected regions of Morocco.
