Accountability
1. Creation of app first aid
The content of this app is based on the book "Help! First Aid for Everyone'.
Learn more about the book here: https://www.rodekruis.be/wat-kan-jij-doen/volg-een-opleiding/eerste-hulp-materiaal/help-eerste-hulp-voor-iedereen/.
2. Evidence-based Practice
Belgian Red Cross-Flanders substantiates its techniques and activities with scientifically proven arguments. The guidelines described in the book and this app serve to provide first aid in the event of an accident or illness. Concretely, this was done according to the AGREE II method (Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation) and the methodological charter of the Centre for Evidence-Based Practice (CEBaP). To do this, CEBap systematically searched for scientific studies in three bibliographic databases: The Cochrane Library, MEDLINE and Embase.
This evidence was then compiled in an evidence summary. The quality of each study was assessed according to the GRADE method (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation). For certain topics, scientific studies were not extensively searched. These were mainly recommendations that are the responsibility of a physician, recommendations that are medicolegal in nature, recommendations that are logical and obvious ("Good Practice Points") and information based on physiology and anatomy.
We translated all found 'evidence' into practical recommendations for first aid, and also formulated 'Good Practice Points'. In doing so, we took into account the preferences and interests of the target population. We also assigned a grade of recommendation to each recommendation according to the GRADE method. In formatting the book, we also incorporated expert opinion. The members of the Medical Commission of the Humanitarian Services of Belgian Red Cross-Flanders reviewed all recommendations and all medical content images and drawings. All members were asked to give their explicit approval via a preparation round for all recommendations that were new or medically-content modified from the 2016 manual. Members also assigned a strength of recommendation according to the GRADE method to all recommendations. Recommendations for which unanimous agreement was not reached during the preparation round were addressed during a series of Medical Committee meetings. Unanimous consensus was reached during the meetings through moderated discussion led by the chair, or in extreme cases, through a formal vote.
The content of the book was then used as the basis for the development of this app.
The list of sources used to create the book are available upon request at app.eerstehulp@rodekruis.be. More info on the methodology used and some examples of an evidence summary can be found at www.rodekruis.be/cebap and www.cebap.org.
3. Products
Belgian Red Cross-Flanders does not recommend any commercial product. Products are only used to clarify a topic.
4. Gender-neutral addressing
In the app, we choose to address with that, them and their. These pronouns give everyone freedom to fill them in for themselves: him, her or them, he, she or they.
5. Partners in development
This app was developed in collaboration with Zenjoy for UX design, Tekst+Beeld for copywriting and Xpirit for development of this app.
