Halle volunteers now well-prepared for disasters and prevention
"Huge thanks to our donors. Thanks to their donations, our volunteers can do what they became Red Cross volunteers for: disaster preparedness and helping people where needed." A grateful Luc Dekegel, Responsible relief service of Red Cross-Halle.
"We have had a number of disasters in our territory that of course we would rather not have experienced. Think of the train disaster in Buizingen, attacks, flooding of the canal. At such times our volunteers show up from everywhere." And then they need sufficient equipment and well-equipped intervention vehicle. That includes personal protection for the volunteers, such as helmets and gloves and tools for when the vehicle is deployed in less accessible places.
"In the train disaster, our intervention team helped evacuate victims from the wrecks. Our volunteers also transported people to the hospitals, took care of relatives of victims and helped at the Advance Medical Aid Station."
All material is utilized
"The equipment, including first aid equipment, an AED device and sets for burns, we purchased in larger quantities. Now the interveners have a completely filled out bag for each victim and don't have to keep track of how much they have already used. So they work more efficiently."
"We don't throw anything away, there is no waste. In fact, we also deploy the material in preventive services, at events such as carnival, the biggest activity in our territory. We also have one of the larger annual fairs: Herne. And there are the straw concerts in the summer. Furthermore, the Halle-Gooik indoor soccer team has managed to bring a UEFA European tournament to Halle for several years now. Last year we furnished the preventive service at the match between Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona."
"For our department, there is only one central fact: the victim must be helped, with the best possible resources and the highest knowledge available to us. This is why we invest in disaster relief. This is how we can continue to take care of our population."
