Become a volunteer with the Medical Reserve Unit
Are you a doctor or nurse who wants to play a meaningful role when our society faces a crisis?
If so, join the Medical Reserve Unit (MRE): a pool of medically trained volunteers who are prepared for specialized deployment in crisis situations.
On February 27, 2026, the Flemish Government approved the cooperation agreement between the Flemish Community and Belgian Red Cross-Flanders the recruitment, readiness, and deployability of an on-call Medical Reserve Unit (MRE).
The MRE combines:
- our existing strengths in disaster response,
- specialized training programs for responding to health and welfare crises.
What does the MRE do?
As a member of the MRE, you may be called upon when additional medical capacity is needed during:
- health and welfare crises such as infectious diseases, environmental incidents, or outbreak management,
- Supporting continuity of medical care in residential facilities.
What can you expect?
Targeted training and preparation
- Specialized and practice-oriented training programs in collaboration with Antwerp University Hospital, the University of Antwerp, and the Institute of Tropical Medicine.
- Annual simulation exercises in collaboration with the Crisis Preparedness Cell (CPC) of the Flemish Government’s Department of Health.
- Social engagement during disasters and health crises.
These training programs are mandatory to ensure you remain employable. They are always relevant, practical, and tailored to your expertise.
Professional support
You’re never on your own. You’ll receive:
- civil liability and personal accident insurance,
- guidance and coordination regarding enrollment and training,
- Professional support during deployment, with on-site coordination from the CPC

Terms and Conditions:
- a valid visa or RIZIV number, or a final-year medical or nursing student,
- willingness to attend training sessions on a regular basis,
- motivation to make a meaningful social contribution during times of crisis.
Experience in disaster response is not required.
