Accountability

1. Creation of app Holds

The content of this app is based on the book 'Listen! First aid for mental health problems'.

This book came about with the help of Zorgnet-Icuro, the UCLL graduate and adult education campus Sociale School Heverlee, the Flemish Patients' Platform / OPGanG, Similes, the Support Center Mental Health, the Flemish Expertise Center Suicide Prevention (VLESP), the Flemish Institute Healthy Living, Eetexpert - knowledge center eating and weight problems and the Flemish Expertise Center Alcohol and other Drugs (VAD). The Flemish Government supported this project.

2. Evidence-based Practice

Belgian Red Cross-Flanders underpins its techniques and activities with scientifically proven arguments. The guidelines described in the book and this app for dealing helpfully with someone experiencing mental health problems have undergone the same course. Specifically, this was done using the AGREE II method (Appraisal of Cuidelines for Research and Evaluation). To do this, the Centre for Evidence-Based Practice Practice (CEBaP) systematically searched for scientific studies in three bibliographic databases: MEDLINE, Embase and PsycNET.

The focus here was on studies that examined the effect of communication (talking, reassuring, comforting, listening, motivating) in the case of mental health problems. The interventions had to be feasible to implement by a layperson, someone without a professional background. The scientific literature was searched specifically for the following themes: stress, grief, shocking event, burnout, depression, anxiety, addiction, psychosis, eating disorders, suicidal thoughts, self-injury and aggressive behavior.

This evidence was then compiled in an evidence summary. The quality of each study was also assessed according to the GRADE method (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation). For certain topics, scientific studies were not searched. These were mainly recommendations related to self-care, recommendations that are logical and obvious, or recommendations related to specific professional caregivers.

We translated all found 'evidence' into practical recommendations. In doing so, we took into account the practical experience, preferences and interests of the target population. We also assigned a degree of recommendation to each recommendation according to the GRADE method. In preparing the book, we also incorporated the opinions of experts. An expert panel was assembled consisting of professionals coming from mental health and academic backgrounds, as well as experiential mental health and addiction professionals in training. The panelists evaluated all the background information and practical recommendations in the draft texts of the book. They formulated suggestions, corrections and additional recommendations based on their expertise and experience. During joint meetings, the revised drafts were discussed, finalized and approved.

The content of the book was then used as the basis for the development of this app.

The list of sources used to create the book are available upon request at FAMP More info on the methodology used and some examples of an evidence summary can be found at www.rodekruis.be/cebap and www.cebap.org

3. Products

Belgian Red Cross-Flanders does not recommend any commercial product. Products are only used to clarify a topic.

In the app, we choose to address with that, them and their. These pronouns give everyone freedom to fill them in for themselves: him, her or them, he, she or they.
