Making people self-reliant
Helping someone in need seems obvious. In theory. In practice, many people panic and don't know what to do. Being able to offer help immediately often prevents worse. Therefore, we want to stimulate self-reliance in Flanders so that everyone is better able to help each other in emergency situations. That way, people can react more forcefully, correctly and efficiently to save the lives of others in need.
We were talking together in the kitchen. Suddenly my husband took hold of his heart area and fell down. I saw immediately that the situation was critical. I called 911, the neighbor and our family doctor, and I started chest compressions and a little later mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Without chest compressions and ventilation, my husband would not have made it....

The reference in first aid
Making people self-reliant is our mission. That is why we organize first aid (EHBO) courses all over Flanders. Our instructors are well trained and have excellent teaching material. We make the exercises as realistic as possible and practical experience is central. This makes us the expert in first aid in Flanders. All our first aid guidelines and publications are scientifically based. We actively follow international guidelines and supplement them with our years of expertise, experience and research. This evidence-based approach guarantees that we always give the best advice.
For a heart-safe Flanders
With our Heart Safe project, we want as many people as possible to learn CPR and defibrillation with an automated external defibrillator (AED). This way we increase the chances of survival in case of cardiac arrest. In addition, we raise awareness about the importance of such devices. The more AEDs there are in public places, sports clubs, schools and companies, the more heart-safe Flanders becomes.
