Plasma record
Flanders shows solidarity with 1,091 plasma donations in one day
Belgian Red Cross-Flanders set a new daily record during Plasma Awareness Week with 1,091 plasma donations in a single day. By comparison, on a normal day the number is between 600 and 700. This achievement exceeds the set goal of 1,000 donations and underscores the growing awareness about the importance of plasma for thousands of people who need it every day.
Crucial role of plasma
Plasma is crucial because it is administered to people with severe burns or in cases of severe blood loss, but is primarily used to produce life-saving drugs that strengthen or stabilize the immune system in the treatment of serious conditions such as immune deficiencies and rare, life-threatening diseases.
Rising demand, growing supply
Global demand for plasma is increasing and Belgian Red Cross-Flanders is committed to growing the supply. With a 12% increase in donations from the previous 12 months and an impressive 65.6% increase in donations during Plasma Awareness Week to date, the organization demonstrates that Flemish people are willing to selflessly help others.
Call to action
With only 0.5% of Flemings currently donating plasma compared to 3% giving blood, there remains much room for growth. Belgian Red Cross-Flanders invites everyone to become a plasma donor throughout the year. Each donation, which can occur every two weeks, makes a substantial difference to thousands of patients nationally who depend on plasma drugs.
Until this week, every donor who donates at one of Belgian Red Cross-Flanders 's 14 donor centers will receive a unique pin as a symbol of Plasma Awareness Week. This pin can be worn in many creative ways: on a t-shirt, scarf or lanyard, as well as a playful accessory such as an earring.
Every plasma donation makes a difference. The donation itself takes about 45 minutes and is completely safe and painless. Those interested can make an appointment through the Belgian Red Cross-Flanders website, which also provides more information about the terms and conditions and the donation process. Every donation helps!
