Extension to peacetime relief efforts
By 1910, the Red Cross had already spread to more than 40 countries. Originally founded to provide assistance to war victims, the idea arose after World War I to continue Red Cross work in peacetime as well. That way, volunteers would also be better prepared to provide assistance in the event of war. An umbrella organization should stimulate the development and expansion of national Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
1919 marked the birth of the League of Red Cross Societies. Through its operation, the League should alleviate and prevent human suffering. This should help maintain and develop lasting peace in the world. The League is now called the "Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
Today, the Red Cross can count on more than 100 million volunteers. More than 180 countries have a national Red Cross or Red Crescent Society with its own operation. This makes the Red Cross the largest relief organization in the world.
