Volunteer at a shelter
This is how we help
On behalf of the government, the Red Cross receives applicants for international protection in Belgium. We offer these people a safe place and a temporary home. By encouraging contact between the residents of reception centers and local residents, we also contribute to their integration into the neighborhood.
Something for you?
- You are at least 16 years old.
- You feel like interacting with other cultures.
- You enjoy speaking other languages.
This is how you contribute to this
At a shelter, there is a lot to do every day. So as a volunteer, you can help in a variety of ways. You take on supportive tasks. For example, you can provide leisure activities or help children with their homework.
You can find the different locations of our shelters here.
How do you do that concretely?
As a volunteer at a shelter:
- You will teach Dutch, French and English language classes and after-school tutoring.
- You will help residents with household tasks: shopping together, doing chores together in the sewing workshop, sorting clothes in the clothing shop, etc.
- You help provide relaxation. In our music studio, creativity studio, talk shop or library. Or you can participate in sports. Fun is guaranteed!
- You help with all kinds of chores.
What do you get in return?
- A time commitment that brings a great deal of satisfaction.
- Knowledge of many different cultures.
- You come into contact with people who often carry very punishing stories.
