Belgian Red Cross-Flanders celebrates 10 years of donor center Aalst

This week, the donor center of Belgian Red Cross-Flanders in Aalst is blowing out ten candles. Since its opening in 2015, more than 110,000 blood and plasma donations have been registered. To pamper donors extra, the Red Cross is providing delicious donuts from Aalst all week long after each donation - in addition to the traditional drink and cookie. Three special donors celebrated with us.
"It's a small gesture, but a warm thank you to everyone who has already donated here," said Vincent Verbeecke, spokesman for Belgian Red Cross-Flanders. "Those who donate plasma or blood save human lives. Then we like to try to give something back."
110,000 donations
In total, more than 110,000 donations took place at the Vaartstraat donor center over the past decade: 25,500 blood donations and more than 85,000 plasma donations. "The center has become an essential link in the Flemish blood and plasma supply," says Verbeecke. "We deliberately put a strong emphasis on plasma at the donor center, because Flanders is not yet fully self-sufficient today. Plasma is crucial for the production of life-saving drugs, but also for transfusions for burns or newborn babies with severe jaundice."
"But this week is not only there to celebrate the donors, the staff also deserves our gratitude. The donor center in Aalst is running very well, thanks to them." says Verbeecke

At the anniversary event, three special donors stopped by. Emiel Hauwelaert (63) is the center's most frequent donor with more than 1,000 plasma donations. "I once started at the center in Erpe-Mere, where Friday nights were especially popular. I came there with a regular group of colleagues - it was fun and useful," says Emiel. "Donating plasma saves lives, and that motivates. But the warm welcome and the staff also make a difference. They are the soul of this center."
Lieve De Knijf, frequent donor at the center, was also in attendance. "I received a blood transfusion myself as a baby, which played a big part in my decision to donate. I can give to others what I once received."
Mayor Christoph D'Haese also gave blood this morning. "The donor center in Aalst is a beacon of solidarity and humanity. In ten years, thousands of residents have given their best to help others - that deserves our deepest respect. As mayor, I am extremely proud of this milestone, and I am grateful for every donor and every staff member who makes this possible. Here's to the next 100,000 donations!"
On to the next decade
